21 Quotes That Will Make You Pack Your Bags And Travel

Words are a very powerful thing, they can make you have all kinds of emotions wash over you, they can change the way you think and can also motivate you to do things you never thought you would do otherwise.

I want to share some of my favorite quotes about travel that have motivated me and kept the flame of wanderlust burning inside of me!

1.

“Travel makes one modest. You see what a tiny place you occupy in the world.” -Gustav Flaubert

One thing that I really hate is people who are so self absorbed and think that they own the world. Just like Gustav Flaubert says, Travel puts you into your place and allows you to see that you’re just a small piece of the whole organism known as humanity. It’s a truly humbling experience and helps you to let go of your self. Speaking from my own experience, I can’t have a big head anymore (I may have had a big head in my past), I’m insignificant in the grand scheme of things but that doesn’t mean i’m not important, it means I am free to be a human and look at everyone else as fully equals.

2.

“Traveling – it leaves you speechless, then turns you into a storyteller.” – Ibn Battuta

When you travel anywhere, you are very limited on the amount of souvenirs you can bring back, some places don’t even have souvenirs. What you do have, are stories. Stories are limitless and last a lifetime. Any material thing will eventually break, wear down, and get thrown away. Stories live. The stories you get will be told decades from now, and one day when you’re old and gray, you will still have your stories and that will give you life.

3.

“Better to see something once than hear about it a thousand times”

In my off time, when I’m not traveling, I tend to watch youtube videos from travel vloggers, travel documentaries, or I read travel blogs. But to see and be where these people actually are, is so much more fulfilling to me than watching them. Don’t get me wrong, I love to expand my horizons by watching things online, but experiencing places and people firsthand, is an experience unmatched by any youtube video.

4.

“To Travel is to Live” – Hans Christian Andersen

The simplicity of this quote makes it all that more complex. I don’t know if Hans Christian Andersen was aware of how profound what he said was, but it’s truly fascinating. I’m a firm believer in that you don’t really live life if you stay in the same town your whole life. Some people get complacent and content in staying in one place, but I would argue that they aren’t living life to its full potential and if they traveled just a little bit, they would know what it means to live.

5.

“He who would travel happily must travel light.” - Antoine de St. Exupery

Coming from a place of experience, I can tell you this is so important to consider when you travel. Light and Tight. That’s what I like to say. You’ll be miserable if you are lugging around a horrendously heavy bag with you all day, from one place to another. Keep it light and your back will thank you for it!

6.

“And then there is the most dangerous risk of all — the risk of spending your life not doing what you want on the bet you can buy yourself the freedom to do it later.” – Randy Komisar

This is something that I feel a lot of people from previous generations don’t understand. A lot from the baby boomer generation and before, don’t understand this concept. To them, you get a degree, get a job, work till you retire, then you retire, and get a fancy car with your retirement. This is not life, this is miserable. Many people say they will work and they will try to save up to travel in a few years. I do get people may not make a lot of money but it’s still possible on little to no money. You may live away your whole life pushing off a dream or passion and before you know it, you are too old to pursue it, don't let that happen.

7.

“One’s destination is never a place, but a new way of seeing things.” - Henry Miller

Travel has honestly shattered all previously held ideals and prejudices I may have had about anyone. You have to admit, most people have some sort of prejudice, unfortunately. However, prejudices get annihilated by travel. It truly changes how you see things and the way you think and I think if more people traveled, the world would truly be a more peaceful and happier place.

8.

“The world is a book and those who do not travel read only one page.” -Augustine of Hippo

This quote goes back to a previous one where I talked about someone who doesn’t leave their little corner. You can’t truly know this whole book called Earth if you don’t read the pages. We always look up to those who are well read, why not be well read on Earth?

9.

“Do not follow where the path may lead. Go instead where there is no path and leave a trail” - Ralph Waldo Emerson

This is the mentality I go into traveling with. I am always looking for off-the-beaten path type of places where the locals go and tourists do not. This is how you get to really know a culture. Tourist culture is a lot different from the national culture of the places you may visit.

10.

“A good traveler has no fixed plans and is not intent on arriving.” - Lao Tzu

Another way in which I travel, I don’t like to be too strict with my plans. Obviously certain things need to be on schedule, hotel check in, check out, etc. but I truly believe you get the best experience in life when you fly by the seat of your pants. Spontaneity breeds the most unique experiences.

11.

“We live in a wonderful world that is full of beauty, charm, and adventure. There is no end to the adventures we can have if only we seek them with our eyes open.” – Jawaharial Nehru

So many people wear negative lenses. I’ve met a lot of people who have a very pessimistic view on life. If you don’t open your eyes and see the beauty and adventure that is all around you, that’s the type of person you end up being. I choose to seek adventure, charm and beauty and it’s truly helped me to be a more positive person.

12.

“Because in the end, you won’t remember the time you spent working in the office or mowing your lawn. Climb that goddamn mountain.”― Jack Kerouac

One of my biggest fears is living a life that I won’t remember and it’s this fear that partially drives my desire to create experiences. One thing you have to know about me is that I hate office jobs, being stuck in a cubicle my whole life is pure torture to me. You need to go out, walk around town, climb a mountain, do something that will make a lasting memory, that’s what you end up remembering.

13.

“To travel is to discover that everyone is wrong about other countries.” - Aldous Huxley

I’ll try not to get political with this one, but no matter what country you are in, you are bombarded on the news by views of other countries. You have these influences from friends, and even family. All of these factors can affect how you perceive other people and cultures. I’ll be the first to admit that I had some preconceived notions about certain people that were proven so wrong and I am so glad that I was wrong because I was able to learn just how amazingly awesome people are and just how similar we all are to each other in every way imaginable.

14.

“Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn’t do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.”― Mark Twain

This is actually the inspiration for a tattoo that I'd like to get one day. “Explore. Dream. Discover.” So simple but so powerful. This hearkens back to other quotes about regret. It’s very much at the forefront of my motivations because I've seen so many people have regrets about things they could have easily done differently and I strive to seize opportunities and live a life devoid of regret.

15.

“You don’t have to be rich to travel well. ” – Eugene Fodor

One thing I always hear from my friends is that “I can’t afford to travel”. Let me tell you something, I've lived my whole life bordering on being broke. I live that poor life, but travel is still possible! Especially today with all these platforms like Airbnb, Uber, And cheap airlines, hostels, etc. You can travel on a very tight budget! You don’t even need to travel far, go to a neighboring state or country via bus or train. The biggest thing holding you back from travel is you, not the money.

16.

“Once a year, go someplace you’ve never been before.” – Dalai Lama

I personally try to go someplace new every week or every other week, but you don’t have to be that extreme, Setting a goal of going somewhere new every year gives you a goal to work towards and gives rewards you can reap afterwards. If you manage to put away $100 a month for a year, you will have $1,200, that’s a good bit of money to get some adventuring done!

17.

“Live your life by a compass, not a clock.” - Stephen Covey

People can get really obsessed about deadlines and being in places before a certain time. Personally i’d say don’t travel with those people *cough* *cough* but it’s true, you need to travel, and live life in general, by a compass. It’s all about where you go, who you meet, what you experience, not if you were five minutes late or got somewhere after it closed. Living by a compass really gives you freedom

18.

“If you’re twenty-two, physically fit, hungry to learn and be better, I urge you to travel – as far and as widely as possible. Sleep on floors if you have to. Find out how other people live and eat and cook. Learn from them – wherever you go.” – Anthony Bourdain

This quote struck a huge chord with me because the first time I saw it I was around 22 years old so I put myself into it. Travel is not about staying in the most luxurious 5 star hotel or resort on a pristine beach. Travel is real and raw, you may have to sleep in a hostel, or someone's spare room, but this leads to more valuable experiences. Food has also been one of the biggest ways I've found to break down boundaries, the essence of a culture is cooked into the food they serve, so eating at a local’s house or a small hole-in-the-wall restaurant will give you a true glimpse into a culture, you also get to eat some of the best food ever!

19.

“I am not the same, having seen the moon shine on the other side of the world.” – Mary Anne Radmacher

As someone who has seen the moon around the world, it’s a truly surreal experience. It’s a real connection between every single person who is under the moon, you realize that someone else thousands of miles away could be looking at the same moon, and you realize that this earth is not as big as you once thought.

20.

“At its best, travel should challenge our preconceptions and most cherished views, cause us to rethink our assumptions, shake us a bit, make us broader minded and more understanding.” – Arthur Frommer

This is exactly what I think travel should be, and it’s what I tell everyone who is scared to travel or has simply not traveled yet. It is honestly the best experience you could ever have in your life. In today’s culture, we are all about growing as an individual and challenging previously held beliefs, I’m telling you the best way to grow and challenge yourself is to travel and see the world.

21.

“Take every chance you get in life, because some things only happen once.” – Karen Gibbs

Never let an opportunity pass you by. Regret can really eat away at you, which is why you need to take every chance. There is the term “YOLO” that was popular a few years ago and it’s honestly true, you do only live on this earth once, if you don’t take that dream trip across Asia, or whatever dream you have, you won’t have the chance to do so ever again once you’re gone. Live a life without regrets and you will live a life well lived.

Many smart people have said many smart things and these were just a few of some that have really stuck with me. I hope these have inspired you and ignited a passion to travel inside of you because I truly believe it’s one of the best things your could ever do with your time and money. Material things will not last, memories, experiences, and personal growth are things that will last a lifetime and even longer!
